Men need more skin care’

August 30, 2007

Padma Shri winner Shahnaz Hussain may give the appearance of an empress of herbal products. But there’s more.. as she reveals in a heart-to-heart with Amita Amin-Shinde. While she is here to launch a men’s fairness cream.

A men’s fairness cream? Does it really work?
Yes, absolutely. I think men need more skin care. And why not? Fair One for men doesn’t mean that one will become fair overnight. It evens out patchy skin that has hues of different colouring.

You started your business after you got married and had a daughter.
Yes, I did. I had studied only till the 7th grade then. Papa showed me a picture of a boy and I got married in 1968.

Sounds like a tough journey…
It was. After marriage we went to Tehran. I wanted to study beauty but the fee was 10 times more than my husband’s salary That’s when I . started writing for a magazine. I wrote under different names.. sometimes cover-to-cover.

Remarriage was a natural thing for me. I thought I couldn’t go on being insecure and unhappy. And Mr Puri’s companionship is fun. I would rather live a happy life.. From a small veranda business in 1971 to a Rs 1,000 crore brand… 600 franchises in India and abroad.. how does it feel?
Aah, yes. It has been a long journey I started out.. (pause).. proba . bly when I was 19. My papa, Chief Justice N U Beg, paid for it by trading his National Savings Certificates. But not many know that the first time he lent me money, I was robbed. I was scared to tell papa. Somehow he got to know. He lent me some more money and said, “Go ahead.”

What do you think of herbal products in the western world? India is very respected abroad.
Though I must say the foreign market wasn’t easy the toughest was .. France. But I managed to conquer that too. I am just back from London, after opening a shop at Harley Street.. A bastion that I’d wanted to conquer for quite some time now.

I think the latter, though I’m very family-oriented. I made sure that I’d always have time for my children. I remember one instance: Sameer was 15 and I had to go to Goa. After work, Sameer and I hired a bike for Rs 100 per hour, and rode on the beach. We even got lost on our way back. It was fun though..

You used to also write poetry for your children. Do you still do that?
I do. But usually I take to poetry writing when there is a death in the family or if I am depressed. My daughter writes poetry too.. I think hers is better than mine. Mine is more melancholic.

Mr Hussain’s death must have been quite a blow..
Those were trying times. My husband died of cardiac arrest in 1998. When he passed away, my whole world collapsed. I couldn’t think of a life beyond him. It wasn’t easy to reorganise my life. I was at very disturbed stage. You know, we were married for about 30 years!

And then you found love the second time..
(Smiles) I met Raj (Puri) in the course of events. He’s a co-partner at A F Ferguson. The moment I met him, I broke down. I was in mourning.. 40 days of black veil. I needed someone to take over a huge part of my work. If I’m alive today it’s because of him. I don’t think a person like him exists. He’s perfect.. really I don’t . think I deserve him. That’s the biggest compliment I can give him.

How was it to start your life all over again?
Remarriage was a natural thing for me even though it’s not for the world. I couldn’t go on being insecure and unhappy And Mr Puri’s . companionship is fun. I would rather live a happy life than brood about the past.

You’ve built such an empire.. what keeps you going?
My work is my addiction. I love what I do. In return, if I am appreciated and loved.. that’s enough. I look at life differently… others may count life in the number of breaths they take, I count life by the number of occasions when you can take the breath away.

These symptoms may indicate presence of SCC-

A red bump on sun-exposed skin which does not go away. This will be found mainly on sun exposed areas - the face, head, hands, or shoulders.

A growing irritated or reddish patch and forms a sore.

A new skin growth that looking like a wart.

A sore on the lower lip, that does not heal or an area of thickened skin on the lower lip, especially in smokers or tobacco chewers or those, whose lips are exposed to the sun and wind.

Diagnosis of Squamous Cell Cancer

Radiation therapy is an effective option for many tumors, especially large lesions on the nose, lips, or eyelids, and for those who can not undergo surgery. The radiation destroys the tumor cells along with some surrounding healthy tissue. Cryosurgery, is also useful in some cases. This method uses liquid Nitrogen to remove the cancer. The wound created by the procedure usually heals within 4 weeks.

A specialized form of surgery, called Mohs micrographic surgery is sometimes done, especially with large tumors with poorly defined edges or on areas of the body where the scar outcome is more important.

In this surgery, the cancerous cells from the healthy looking margins are carefully removed.

Skin care product maker ventures into franchising

August 7, 2007

THE bullish beauty, health and wellness industry in the Philippines has paved the way for a skin care product manufacturer and retailer in Cebu to venture into franchising.

“There is a strong demand for skin care products in the country,” said Felissa Fleur beauty and spa business consultant and owner Felisa Palis.

Thus, Palis, a Cebuana, decided to open a franchising company called Felissa Fleur Franchising Philippines Corp.

She said the company has already gained the interest of about five potential local franchisees, including some from Manila.

“All they have to do is submit their letter of intent and pre-qualifications so we can give them our details of investment,” Palis said.

In an interview with Sun.Star Cebu, she said the space requirement is between 60 to 250 square meters and the franchise fee is pegged at P400,000. The total estimated investment cost is around P1.8 million to P6.5 million.

Expansion

The Felissa brand, dubbed Royal Traditional Malaysian Spa, was introduced in Malaysia by Palis in 1997 as a cosmetics company that manufactures beauty products.

Malaysia alone has 13 company-owned branches, and over 180 distributors.

In the last 10 years, Palis has expanded the company’s operations in Asian countries like Singapore and Brunei.

The combined volume of skin care products manufactured in Malaysia alone is at around 800,000 to 900,000 monthly, Palis said.

Volume

She hopes to more than double the volume in the Philippines especially since the market for beauty products here is showing an upward trend.

Palis said growing the brand in the Philippines is a “big personal achievement” in her hopes to provide Filipinos with a “truly Asian” beauty enhancement through relaxing and detoxifying treatments made from all-natural organic extracts.

“I understand the demands of the market here. Before I recommend the product, I try it out myself,” Palis said.

Manufacturing and selling her own skin care and cosmetic product line is what she considers her niche because “if you know the ingredients to your products, you know what to recommend your clients.”

Restaurant

Meanwhile, Palis revealed that the company will also be franchising Cebu-grown Vensh to Malaysia.

Vensh is a Malaysian restaurant located right beside Felissa Spa along Gorordo Ave., Cebu City.

“If I grow it here in the Philippines and bring it back to Malaysia, it will be known there as an international restaurant. Then, I can cater to the high-end market,” Palis said.

In order to attract the high-end market here, she used the same approach for Felissa—growing the brand in Malaysia and bringing it back to the Philippines

Personal Care Products Can Lead To Cancer

August 2, 2007

Our skin is a two way membrane. During perspiration toxins are eliminated from our body through it. Recently scientists have found that some chemicals when applied to the skin can penetrate the body and be absorbed by the body in significant amounts. Many personal care products contain chemicals which are considered hazardous by EPA. National Institute of Occupational safety and health found 884 chemicals used in personal care products and cosmetics are known to be toxins. The numbers of products used by adults and children that contain potent carcinogens are very high. It was reported recently that 500 dangerous chemicals have been found on a single fat cell in a healthy looking British woman. Another report was of 350 man made chemicals and residues used in personal care products found in breast milk.

Ammonia derivative DEA-Diethanolamine,TEA- Triethanolamine and MEA-Monoethanolamine when combined with products containing preservative nitrates form notrosamines which are carcinogenic. FDA urged the companies to remove them from shelves but even now almost 37% if products tested contained nitrosamines.

If Alcohol content in mouthwash rises to more than 25% it is known to cause mouth, tongue and throat ulcer.

Discount Pharmacy - Buy Pharmacy at discount prices including free shipping.Discount Pharmacy provides confortable and easy way to order discount pharmacy online.FD&C or D&C color pigments are from coal tar and are carcinogenic.

Mineral oil made from petroleum ingredient found in baby oil and skin care can hinder skin respiration and can age skin prematurely. Baby oil is almost 100% mineral oil.

Phthalates exposure through hair mousse and hair spray can cause genital abnormality. It can be absorbed into the body through skin and also through inhalation.

Propylene glycol used in hair conditioners deodorants cosmetics baby products body lotions skin care and tooth pastes and even added to human and pet food can cause eye irritation, skin irritation, headaches and nausea.

Scientist recently found paraben in breast cancer tissue. It is used as a preservative and is considered to increase oestrogen levels in women and can drive the growth of breast tumors.

Methylisothiazolinone –M.I.T found in anti microbial soap, shampoo and other personal care products can cause nerve damage. It is chemically identical to Agent Orange used in Vietnam War.

SLS- Sodium laureth sulphate found in shampoos, toothpaste, gels, and cleaners used as a foaming agent can cause permanent impairment of eyes and corrodes hair follicles and impairs the ability to grow hair.

These are some of the harmful chemicals added to our personal care products. There are much more chemicals added to these products and scientists are discovering more chemicals to be harmful. Even many of the so called natural and organic products have these harmful chemicals added to them. Try to use chemical free and organic products.

Doctors Have Skin Color Bias

July 22, 2007

A new study finds that most doctors have an unconscious bias that results in them giving quicker and better treatment to whites than African American patients

A new study finds that most doctors have an unconscious bias that results in them giving quicker and better treatment to whites than African American patientsA new study has found that when it comes to providing medical care, a person’s skin color plays a considerable role in determining who is treated first.

The study, performed by the Disparities Solutions Center, found that doctors are more likely to give prompt medical care to whites over African Americans, due to an unconscious bias.

“We found that as doctors’ unconscious biases against blacks increased, their likelihood of giving [clot-busting] treatment decreased,” said the lead author of the study, Dr. Alexander R. Green of Massachusetts General Hospital. “It’s not a matter of you being a racist. It’s really a matter of the way your brain processes information is influenced by things you’ve seen, things you’ve experienced, the way media has presented things.”

Internet Pharmacy - Buy Pharmacy at reasanoble prices.Internet Pharmacy provides confortable and easy way to order pharmacy via internet.”Years of advanced education and egalitarian intentions are no protection against the effect of implicit attitudes,” said Dr. Thomas Inui, president of the Regenstrief Institute Inc. in Indianapolis, which studies vulnerable patient groups. “When do they surface? When we’re involved with high-pressure, high-stakes decision-making, when there’s a lot riding on our decisions but there isn’t a lot of time to make them, that’s when the implicit attitudes that are not scientific rise up and grab us.”

The study is the first of its kind to look into the unconscious racial bias that most doctors have when it comes to providing medical care for African Americans. It was performed using more than 200 participants who were training to become doctors. The participants were presented with two patients, one white and one black, both of which presenting with signs of a heart attack. The researchers found that the doctors were more likely to agressively treat the white patient than the black patient.

The study is published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine.
